While Walking Outdoors, inspired by landscape
This piece started out as a challenge I posed for myself. What would it look like to just start drawing with pen & ink directly on the fabric? Taking a risk, what would I have to lose? I chose to start my drawing on silk noil that had already had clear acrylic mediums monoprinted on it which created interesting textures and resist patterns and continued to add imagery and writing. A few months after I finished it, I began to see a connection to the wildfires that the world has been experiencing. That is when my title At Risk became even more important.
This piece is about the loss of my mother and brother in 2016. They died within 6 weeks of each other. They never saw “eye to eye” and their relationship was full of misunderstanding and judgment; they never reconciled.
I imagine their souls reuniting, with hope, healing and love. The vertical, horizontal, and crossed stitched lines represent all souls coming together after leaving this world.
I know that working on this has been a step towards healing myself, releasing of some of the helplessness, guilt and sadness at not being able to help them come together in this lifetime.
I feel a deep connection to nature. Living in New England allows me to experience distinct seasonal changes. With each season I have an opportunity to observe and appreciate the gifts that come with this never-ending cycle of birth, growth, decline and rest. This pattern echoes throughout all life. It fills my heart with hope knowing that there is a constant, that things repeat, coming full circle.
Pen and Ink washes on silk were the beginning of this piece, then came layers of printed acrylic medium and more washes of thinned paint and soon a landscape began to appear. A scene with subtle messages, muted missives, secrets that the earth holds, some of them veiled. If we sit quietly, we might start to hear and comprehend what mother earth is sharing with us.
